Which events can I submit my films for free?

Peter B asked:

I’m an amateur filmaker (specialising in Documentaries & Thrillers) based in London and I’m trying to submit my films to festivals across the UK but I find all of them charge a ridiculous amount that’s non-refundable. This is very frustrating and I was wondering if anyone knew of some independent film events that are cheap or even free for me to submit my productions?

Believe it or not, there is actually an event taking place next month (I think it’s on the 2nd) called the British Urban Film Festival (commonly abbreviated to ‘BUFF’) which allows free submission of films. They mainly showcase dramas and real-life stories. Also, I believe entry is free for under 25s (though you should check this and even if you’re not under 25, entry should still be cheap anyway).
There would (like most festivals) be a closing date for submission so your best bet is give the organisers a call and see if you can still enter one of your films

I studied film at Uni only a couple of years a go and found it a real nightmare showcasing my work unless I had a spare 100 quid up front. You just need persistence!
If you are really keen to promote your films and it can only be done on the cheap/for free, then why not check out the festival’s link as they might just be the ideal type of platform you need to get your fut on the filmaking ladder.
    Hope that helps
